Australia
Australia is the earth's largest island yet it is the smallest
continent. Because of vast desert regions (approximately one third of
Australia) and low rainfall in many areas it is unable to support a
very large population. The mainland has states and 2 territories
(Northern Territory and Canberra). Tasmania is the sixth state,
separated from Victoria by Bass Strait and is 200 kilometres south of
Victoria.
It has a population of approximately 20 million people and is a mix of
cultures, ethnic origins, marital status, family structures, education
and religion.
Canberra - the capital of Australia has a population of
around 350 thousand people and houses the Australian National
Parliament buildings. The government is democratically
elected and at present Kevin Rudd is Prime Minister of
Australia.

Victoria
Victoria
has a population of just under 5 million. It is regarded as one of the
most livable states in Australia. Melbourne is the capital of
Victoria and is a very lively city with festivals, friendly
people. Victoria weather is variable. It is variable and has four
distinct seasons, and it said that "Melbourne has 4 seasons in one
day." Melbourne experiences a varied climate with Victoria's northern
regions being drier and warmer than the southern regions.

average of 28°C however some days could be as high as 40°C whilst others
could be 15°C
Autumn
- is generally considered the most pleasant season in Melbourne with
mild weather and warm sunny days and pleasant breezes.Towards the end
of Autumn cloudy weather increases and there is more liklehood of
showers. Average temperatures would be around 17°C Frosts can be
common in Autumn followed by warm sunny days.
Winter- is when Melbourne experiences some of its
coldest weather with a daily average of around 14°C. The weather can be as
cold as 5°and in the alpine regions snow may fall with temperatures
dropping as low as -5°C
Spring - is the time when plants grow fastest. The weather begins to
warm up and a full range of weather may be experienced within a very
short period. Average temperatures are around 17°C although cloudy
overcast days are not unusual and gusty winds can prevail.

New South Wales
Southern New South Wales
has a four season climate similar to Victorias but several degrees
warmer. The state has a population of around six and a half million
people. with the greater number of these being in Sydney and outlying
regions. Sydney was recently voted as the most livable city in the
world.
Northern New South Wales can be quite hot especially in the western
areas of the state.

Canberra
Canberra is a territory
surrounded by rural New South Wales. It is the capital territory of
Australian and houses the federal government buildings and the national
|War Memorial and National Mint buildings. Around three hundred and
fifty thousand people live there and most of these would work in
federal buildings.

Queensland
Queensland would be
regarded as the sunshine state and its weather would be regarded as
tropical. Monsoonal rain and cyclones are common during the wet season.
It has a large almost pristine coastline which attracts many surfers to
the state, especially the "Gold Coast" region. It has a population of
just over three and a half million people.

Tasmania
Tasmania has a cool temperate climate and is well
known for its mountain views and old growth forests. It has a low
population of about half a million people and is visited often
by people wishing to see the old penal settlement of Port Arthur as
well as people wishing to visit the wilderness.

South
Australia
South Australia is the most arid state of Australia. Most
people live in the South-East corner of the state. The Flinders Ranges
hold a fascination for the tourist where dry rocky outcrops metge into
the desert and people are able to explore 'Outback Australia.' south
Australia has a population of around one and a half million people.

Western Australia
Western Australia is the largest
state with only a population about 2 million people. Much of the
interior of the state is arid. The state has a diverse climate from
'monsoonal' in the north to 'mediteranean' in the south-west corner.
The state is famous for its native wildflowers and great mineral wealth.
Northern Territory
The Northern Territory is the least
populated area in Australia. In Darwin in the far north it has just two
seasons - hot dry and hot wet. The vast area is very lightly populated
with approximately two hundred thousand people. In the centre of
Australia (southern part of Northern Territory is the famous'Uluru' or
'Ayers Rock.' which is now controlled by its indigenous people. This
area is classed as desert but after it gets rain the desert bursts
forth as wildflowers grow and give forth an amazing sea of color.
